Job purpose

The jobholder is responsible to manage the Inspection & Corrosion Department's policies, processes and team to provide the required technical and engineering support in the areas of inspection, NDT, corrosion, risk-based inspection, welding and related metallurgy aspects.

This role includes the technical authority of corrosion and inspection management system overlooking responsibilities of establishing standards and developing tests, evaluating technology for use by assets in enhancing equipment performance, providing assurance to executive management on facility use and integrity.

Reports corrosion and inspection performance.

Job specific accountabilities

Technical management
  • Manage the development and implementation of the Metallurgy, Inspection and Corrosion Management Policies to govern the Risk Based Inspection (RBI), Corrosion Control and Corrosion Monitoring activities.
  • Monitor and secure the availability of competent technical resources in inspection, Non-destructive Testing (NDT), metallurgy, welding, corrosion, and RBI activities to achieve the department functional objectives.
  • Develop, secure, and maintain comprehensive documentation and asset data management for effective Inspection and Corrosion management implementation.
  • Provide technical advice, generate, and consolidate ideas and initiatives into new strategic technical integrity targets.
  • Direct maintenance and updating of the Company's Corrosion and Inspection Management System. Arrange periodic reviews to upgrade general corrosion control and inspection standards, procedures, and systems to improve efficiency.
  • Ensure timely implementation of the Company's corrosion control policies and standards related to Cathodic Protection, Chemical Inhibition, Internal Corrosion Monitoring, Materials Selection/Specification, Failure Analysis, Fitness for Service (FFS) assessments, Coating Specification, Inspection & Evaluation, Data Gathering and Processing and other Miscellaneous Corrosion Inspections.
Processes' planning & control
  • Plan the department inspection and corrosion management activities, integrate into the Function 5-Year Business Plan and control expenditures against approved budget.
  • Plan, lead, and control the inspection programs for all plant fixed equipment and piping, including the pressure relief devices, to ensure equipment safety.
  • Ensure the implementation of periodic inspection programs through Risk Based Inspection management and the update of inspection findings to keep equipment risks at ALARP level.
  • Ensure the implementation of corrosion control and corrosion monitoring tools to ensure reliable asset operation.
  • Manage the development of an Integrity Management System in the company, through the coordination and supervision of resolute contractor(s), shareholders specialist(s) and company's Integrity Focal Points in the various divisions involved.
Projects & turnaround support
  • Provide guidance on the material specifications and selection, and construction technical specifications for new projects.
  • Interface with regulatory bodies to negotiate/influence arrangements favorable to project and integrity program execution.
  • Plan, organize and lead fixed equipment inspections on-stream and during turnarounds, planned and unplanned unit shutdowns. Report integrity threats and recommend resolution to secure the asset integrity.
  • Ensure technical aspects related to corrosion mitigation and facilities inspection are undertaken in full coordination with other technical functions within the Company.
  • Direct and participate with subordinate engineers in defining and preparing detailed specifications and scopes of work for contracted activities. Advise/endorse contractors' pre-qualification, vet tenders and contract documents and endorse technical evaluation for contract awarding.
Engineering standards
  • Manage the Technical Authority of the Inspection, Metallurgy, Corrosion, Welding, Non-destructive examination, RBI and Material Selection.
  • Ensure the implementation of regulations, codes, standards, and best engineering codes of practice to ensure fixed equipment integrity throughout the entire asset life cycle at optimum cost.
  • Lead the implementation of quality standards/codes/company procedures to maintain equipment reliability and availability and identify integrity threats.
  • Share experience with other fixed equipment Subject Matter Experts within ADNOC and Borealis to improve fixed equipment asset integrity.
  • Ensure alignment with ADNOC directives and other OPCO's initiatives relevant to integrity, corrosion & inspection, accident investigations, Emergency Control Centre, etc.
Asset integrity & assurance
  • Review, approve and manage integrity related Change Requests (CRs) to ensure asset integrity during the entire asset lifecycle.
  • Participate in various site level audits, identify areas of concern and recommend corrective action to improve plant asset integrity.
  • Lead and coordinate root cause analyses (RCA) and failure investigations relating to equipment failures or unexpected degradation and recommend corrective actions to improve asset health.
  • Advise on plant and equipment fitness for purpose. Direct investigation of failures to identify causes. Endorse recommendations to prevent recurrences, highlight areas of concern and advise where improvements of protective systems/mitigation measures are needed.
  • Review and audit inspection and corrosion mitigation control activities on all Company's and ADNOC's Sole Risk (ASR) oil & gas and support facilities.
  • Lead respective engineering studies towards supporting the upgradation of fixed asset equipment reliability (FER) and extension of equipment life cycle.

Qualifications, experience, knowledge & skills

Minimum qualification
  • University degree in Industrial, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, or Metallurgy/Corrosion Science.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, and Arabic is preferable.
Minimum experience & knowledge & skills
  • Minimum of 12-15 years of experience in engineering, maintenance, and technical occupations.
  • Minimum of 8 years in Metallurgy, Corrosion, and Inspection designations.
  • Working exposure in fixed equipment and piping inspection, corrosion monitoring and control, welding and proficiency in the construction and inspection codes (ASME VIII, Div. 1 & 2, API 510, 570, 653, 580/581, 579, 571).
  • Completed projects: Plant turnarounds and unit shutdowns experience in a supervisory role.
  • Sound knowledge in design, construction, welding, examination, and corrosion control of fixed equipment.
  • Preferences for the above may indicate sectors/functions/areas/location/regional/discipline.
