This role involves conducting inspections of materials upon delivery, during storage, and throughout the construction process.

The material inspector ensures that only approved materials are used, verifies their compliance through testing and documentation, and works closely with the project team and suppliers to resolve any material-related issues that may arise.

Key job duties:

Material inspection & compliance:

  • Inspect materials upon delivery to the site, ensuring they meet the approved specifications and quality standards outlined in the project documents.
  • Verify that all materials used in the construction process are compliant with the project's design requirements, industry standards, and local regulations.
  • Monitor material storage on-site to ensure that materials are stored properly to prevent contamination, damage, or degradation.

Documentation & record keeping:

  • Maintain detailed records of material inspections, including certificates of compliance, test reports, delivery tickets, and inspection reports.
  • Ensure that all material-related documentation, such as material submittals, purchase orders, and material approval requests, is properly filed and accessible for review.
  • Prepare and submit material inspection reports, highlighting any discrepancies or non-compliance with project specifications.

Material testing & monitoring:

  • Coordinate and perform routine material testing, such as concrete strength tests, asphalt testing, soil compaction tests, and other material-related quality assessments.
  • Record the results of material testing and provide recommendations based on the findings to ensure that all materials meet or exceed the required standards.
  • Assist in conducting field tests to monitor material performance during the construction phase.

Non-conformance identification & resolution:

  • Identify and report any material defects, damages, or deviations from approved material standards or specifications.
  • Investigate the cause of material non-conformance, prepare non-conformance reports (NCRs), and work with suppliers and contractors to resolve material-related issues.
  • Ensure that corrective actions are implemented and verify that the affected materials are either replaced or rectified in accordance with quality standards.

Supplier & contractor coordination:

  • Liaise with suppliers and contractors to ensure the timely delivery of materials and to address any material issues or concerns that may arise during construction.
  • Verify that the materials delivered match the approved specifications and communicate with the procurement team regarding any discrepancies.
  • Review material submittals and approvals from contractors to ensure they align with project requirements before materials are ordered or delivered.

Site inspections & monitoring:

  • Conduct routine site inspections to monitor material usage and ensure that construction activities are carried out with the proper materials as per the approved plans and specifications.
  • Inspect materials during installation and construction to ensure that they are being used appropriately and that their installation meets quality and design standards.
  • Verify that installation procedures are followed correctly to maintain material integrity.

Regulatory & safety compliance:

  • Ensure that all materials used on the project meet the required safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
  • Monitor compliance with safety regulations during the handling and storage of materials, ensuring that proper safety protocols are followed on-site.

Reporting & issue resolution:

  • Prepare and submit daily or weekly material inspection reports to the project manager, detailing any issues, discrepancies, or material shortages.
  • Escalate any unresolved material issues or delays to the relevant project team members for prompt action.
  • Keep the project team informed about material-related concerns that may impact project timelines or quality.

Material inventory control:

  • Assist in tracking material quantities, usage, and inventory levels to ensure that materials are available as needed and are used efficiently.
  • Monitor and report on any discrepancies in material inventory and ensure that materials are not wasted or overused.

Final inspection & handover:

Participate in final material inspections at project completion.
