Senior Embedded Hardware & Automation Engineer
Job Description
Senior Embedded Hardware & Automation Engineer
Technology Innovation Institute (TII) is a publicly funded research institute, based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It is home to a diverse community of leading scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and researchers from across the globe, transforming problems and roadblocks into pioneering research and technology prototypes that help move society ahead.
The organization is seeking an experienced Senior Embedded Systems & Automation Software Engineer with a strong background in electronic system design, hardware–software integration, and advanced automation programming. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development of prototype electronic assemblies, control systems, device interfaces, and high-quality PC-based applications for device operation, monitoring, and visualization. This position requires deep technical expertise in LabVIEW, Python, electronics engineering, motor control, and adherence to applicable electrical and safety standards.
The job includes occasional short-term overseas travel and conducting experiments and tests in both indoor and outdoor environments, depending on the requirements.
Responsibilities:
Embedded Hardware & Automation- Implement, test, and optimize motor control systems (stepper, BLDC, DC, servo) for precision device actuation.
- Perform component selection, schematic design, hardware bring-up, signal integrity verification, and system-level debugging.
- Develop advanced automation and measurement systems using LabVIEW, including DAQ integration, control loops, instrument drivers, and workflow automation.
- Build robust control, communication, and data-processing applications in Python, including device drivers, test scripts, and backend control logic.
- Design and implement communication interfaces for PC–device interaction (USB, RS-232/485, CAN, Ethernet/TCP-IP, SPI/I²C bridge systems).
- Lead hardware–software integration of prototype devices, ensuring stable, reliable, and deterministic system performance.
- Conduct functional, environmental, and compliance-oriented testing.
- Generate technical documentation, including system specifications, test reports, wiring diagrams, and design reviews.
- 7+ years of professional experience in embedded systems engineering, electronic hardware development, automation engineering, or a related discipline.
- Expert-level proficiency in LabVIEW, including experience with instrument control, data acquisition, and UI development.
- Strong programming capabilities in Python, including libraries for device communication, GUI frameworks (e.g., PyQt, Tkinter, or custom), and automation.
- Proven experience with motor control algorithms and motor-driver hardware (stepper, brushless, servo).
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement PC-based control and visualization software, with emphasis on reliability, responsiveness, and usability.
- Proficiency with electronic debugging tools: oscilloscopes, analyzers, power measurement systems, etc.
- Strong understanding of communication protocols (USB, UART, SPI, I²C, Modbus, CAN, Ethernet).
- Master's degree in laser/optical physics, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, or similar.
- At least 5 years of working experience in an R&D department (or similar environment) directly related to the topics.
- Strong analytical, diagnostic, and system-level problem-solving abilities.
- Precise and professional technical documentation practices.
- Ability to work independently as a technical lead in prototype development.
- Effective communication and collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
