Overview

General summary:

The English Language Learner (ELL) teacher provides English language development instruction to children who are acquiring English as an additional language, working collaboratively with other instructional personnel, including a district-wide team of ELL teachers, to meet the individual needs of each child.

Required activities include planning and delivering lessons, collaborating with classroom teachers and specialists, administering formative and summative assessments, and completing documentation required for compliance with KHDA.

Purpose of the Job:

To teach, supervise, and assess assigned students according to their educational needs and deliver the relevant curriculum, ensuring that each student achieves academic success.

To contribute to the wider school community.

To supervise Junior Teachers and Learning Support Assistants.

Accountability Objectives:

ELL teachers are the language experts in the buildings where they serve.

Teachers are expected to evaluate, instruct, and improve English proficiency as well as serve as a resource to the school for English language concerns.

Position Qualifications:

Required experience and training:

Bachelor's degree in education from an accredited university.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of first and second language acquisition theory.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of second language learning patterns and best practices in English language development.
  3. Demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary in evaluating individual learning styles and needs, resulting in planning an appropriate course of study for individual students.
  4. Plan and deliver lessons in English language development.
  5. Collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to ensure achievement of ELLs across content areas.
  6. Administer formative and summative assessments to monitor progress and ensure student achievement.
  7. Reflect an awareness and acceptance of cultural differences exhibited by the students and their families.
  8. Possess characteristics necessary for acting as an advocate for limited English-speaking students within the school system.
  9. Possess skills necessary for serving as a liaison between the school and the home.
  10. Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate with classroom teachers, administration, and families.
  11. Possess and utilize personal skills necessary for improving student attitudes toward learning and school.
  12. Complete documentation required for compliance with NCLB Title III and NDE Rule 15.
  13. Attend district ELL meetings and professional development offerings. Participate in ongoing professional development including ELL staff meetings.
  14. Serve as a resource to classroom teachers to help ELL students achieve academically in the classroom.
  15. Administer a language screener to students for whom a language barrier is impeding their academic success.
  16. Maintain accurate ELL cumulative files and communicate changes to Student Services.
  17. Create a schedule that best meets the needs of the language students.
  18. Connect ELL families with school events.
  19. Create individual language goals for students who benefit from language support.
Curriculum
  • Demonstrate good knowledge of the curriculum, keeping abreast of current changes and modifications.
  • Be fully aware of and implement all school policies, schemes of work, and agreed planning.
  • Adopt a Project Based Learning approach to learning, teaching, and the enrichment program.
  • Produce well-planned, interesting, and differentiated lessons from the medium-term plans, using the agreed school format and make them available on the school drive.
  • Be aware of and use the resources in the school to enhance teaching and students' learning.
  • Ensure that academic standards and expectations are maintained and that students are given regular written and verbal feedback with work being marked as per the school policy.
  • Ensure that any records of assessment are kept up to date.
  • Administer and mark any formal assessments in accordance with guidelines given.
  • Encourage students to develop skills for lifelong learning.
Administration
  • Prepare and complete comprehensive and informative reports as decided by the principal using the formats given.
  • Ensure that reports are completed by the deadlines given, having been checked and then reviewed by another member of staff.
  • Ensure that the class file is organized properly, kept up to date, and remains at school in case of absence.
  • Ensure that all records and data collection are kept up to date on the database and that information is passed on by deadlines given.
Behavior Management
  • Create an environment where good behaviours are encouraged and rewarded.
  • Implement the school behaviour management policy.
Resources
  • Ensure that resources are looked after carefully by all students and that students are taught to use them appropriately.
  • Ensure that all resources are stored tidily and appropriately.
  • Work with colleagues and specialist teachers in putting together orders.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Undertake before school, after school, and break duties as outlined by the principal.
  • Undertake assemblies, parent meetings, and information meetings as outlined by the principal.
  • Liaise with the SENCO regarding children needing or receiving support.
  • Be available as required to assist with additional duties as assigned.
