Job Description

We are seeking a passionate and visionary Family Program Unit Head to lead the development and delivery of innovative, inclusive, and engaging learning experiences for young audiences. This is a vital leadership role responsible for ensuring contemporary artacross exhibitions, collections, and commissionsis accessible, relevant, and inspiring for schools and families.

You will shape and drive a long-term vision for the Schools and Families Programme that aligns with the museum's mission and strategic priorities, working collaboratively with artists, curators, educators, and community partners to create dynamic and impactful experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Programme Vision
  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of a creative and curriculum-linked education programme for schools and families.
  • Deliver a long-term vision that aligns with the museum's mission and contributes to institutional priorities around access, engagement, and representation.
  • Advocate for the role of creative learning both within the museum and in broader educational contexts.
Programme Delivery & Oversight
  • Design and deliver age-appropriate programming for school audiences (from early years to secondary), including exhibition tours, workshops, CPD for teachers, and digital resources.
  • Develop hands-on, family-focused activities such as workshops, holiday programmes, sensory-friendly sessions, and large-scale events.
  • Collaborate with curators, artists, and external partners to develop artist-led and co-created learning opportunities.
  • Ensure all programmes are inclusive, accessible, and responsive to the needs of diverse learners.
Team & Stakeholder Management
  • Lead, manage, and inspire a team of educators, artists, and freelancers to deliver high-quality programming.
  • Oversee all aspects of programme planning, budgeting, scheduling, evaluation, and reporting.
  • Ensure safeguarding, risk assessment, and contract protocols are in place and upheld.
Outreach & Partnerships
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with schools, teachers, families, local authorities, and community organisations.
  • Represent the museum within relevant education and cultural networks.
  • Create targeted outreach strategies to engage underrepresented or non-traditional audiences.
Marketing & Communications
  • Work with the Communications and Digital teams to effectively promote the Schools and Families Programme across multiple channels.

Person Specification:

  • Proven experience in educational programming, ideally within a cultural or arts environment.
  • Strong understanding of the national curriculum and contemporary educational practices.
  • Skilled in working with diverse audiences and inclusive practice.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and project management skills.
  • Ability to build collaborative partnerships and manage multiple stakeholders.
